Bless the Kids

Bless the Kids started with four ladies praying at my dining room table. Our heart’s desire was to do something to help our community. We saw so many needs but didn’t know where to begin. During prayer this scripture in Matthew 19 came forth:

14) But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” 15) And He laid His hands on them and departed from there.

After reading it, we all felt that we were to do something to help children and began to discuss how. The Lord put on our hearts that there are many exceptional, talented and gifted children who need the tools to succeed in school.

So, we decided to give school supplies to children of homeless families. Our first year, 2003, we distributed pencils rulers and notebooks at park outreaches. That was good, but we quickly realized the children needed more than that to succeed. So, back to prayer at my dining room table where we got the idea to contact schools and find out what the kids really needed to be a successful student.

In August of 2004 we contacted a grade school close to my home and got a list of supplies the children needed. The school also told us they had 10 wonderful kids without supplies. We brought those children backpacks filled with school supplies, activity book, toothbrush kit and a toy. That is how Bless the Kids Backpack Project got started.

In 2014 we distributed 325 backpacks to homeless, low-income and foster care public school children. We also expanded to help children all year long by providing clothing, shoes, school supplies and other needed items to children in crisis. This year we expect to bless even more children and families with the back packs, school supplies and benevolence. At Christmas we shower children who are victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse with gifts of toys and clothing. The need is great and our resources are few.

It’s because of the heart of Jesus that we give these back packs out each year and help children all year long. We know how important every child is and we know that our Lord Jesus wants to bless families. He wants each child to do well in school. He has plans for them that is full of hope. He thinks about them all the time.

Each child is a unique and exceptional person and we are very blessed to be able to be even a small part of their success.
