He Gave Them Power

Our promise is a spectacular fulfillment of Matthew Chapter 10. In verse one of this chapter, Jesus summons His Disciples.

And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. (NKJV)

We need to take note that there is a prerequisite to receive the promise of these verses. First you have to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Not just someone who says they know Jesus as Savior but one who has relationship with Him, follows Him, and studies His word to show themselves approved. You need to be His student and you need to be in the process of becoming like Him in your thoughts, word and deeds. Disciples are daily being transformed, not active in worldly things they are active in Godly things.

And there is a simple but profound secondary prerequisite: You have to go to Jesus when He calls. When Jesus called them the Disciples responded. Our number one step in the New Year, in any year, is to answer His call.

It says in this verse that when they came to Him, He gave them power and authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure all kinds of weakness and infirmity

“He gave” is the Greek word Didomi “did oh mee.” This is an awesome word that is far more than handing something to someone. It is more of an impartation or a stirring up. Among its many applications it means adventure, bestow, bring forth, commit, deliver, to give, to grant or hinder, smite or strike with the palm of the hand.

As I read the description of this word, I had a flash of a scene where Jesus smacks each disciple on the forehead with His palm and sends them forth.

What did Jesus bestow, grant, give, deliver, stir up and impart to them? POWER!

The word for power here is exousia ex-oo-see’-ah – not dunamis often used in the New Testament. Dunamis is the explosive power to instantly take care of spiritual hindrances.

This is different… it is more in the realms of authority. It infers the transfer of ability – the impartation of privilege, or the delegation of influence.

The one who receives exousia becomes a force like the one who gave. The recipient, after the transfer, has more capacity, more competency, more freedom, more mastery – they enter a realm of authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power and strength They have the right to represent the one who gave the authority.

It further says of exousia that the person becomes a magistrate, superhuman, a potentate. This means they stand in a position of supernatural spiritual jurisdiction. We have authority to make things happen or forbid them from happening in the Name of Jesus.

Exousia is a promise to us. It is available for the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is what the Father wants us to step into in 2012. He wants us to be the House of Jesus He called us to be.

Now, in this verse we know we have been called to Jesus. He has imparted to us exousia, power/authority. What is the power He gave to be used for?

It is power over unclean spirits to cast them out AND to cure all kinds of disease, all kinds of weakness, and infirmity. Hallelujah!

Cure is the word therapeuō ther-ap-yoo’-o

Interestingly, it means to wait upon menially or be a servant and to adore God, and thereby to specifically relieve people of disease:— it means to cure, heal, and worship. We get our word therapeutic from therapeuo. Worshipping God is indeed therapeutic and according to this scripture, His worshipper servants relieve people of disease!

The word used for disease is nosos – it is used to describe both physical illness and moral maladies.

The word used for infirmity is malakia mal-ak-ee’-ah. This word means weaknesses in the body or debility which is a loss of strength and energy and enervation which is to lose physical, mental and moral vitality.

After studying these words, the first verse of Matthew 10 as a promise for 2012, I got really excited at what the Father has planned for us this year.

His Son is calling us to Him just like He called the twelve. Jesus constantly calls His disciples to Him and this promise has always been ours, but we have not had ears to hear. We haven not answered the call.

In verses 2 through 4 His disciple’s names are listed. All the ones who answered and came to Him are listed. He wants our names added to the role call of disciples in verse 2 through 4.

Truly it is vital that we answer His call. Particularly, the baby-boom generation must answer for the sake of our children and our grandchildren. We are in danger of missing a window of opportunity if we do not answer His call.

Alexander Maclaren – a Baptist preacher who ministered before and during the world wide revival in the early 1900’s alongside Spurgeon and others said “We ought to be the standing witnesses in the World of the REALITY of a supernatural influence.” (emphasis added)

In 1890 He said the belief in the actual presence of the Divine Spirit of God “who teaches and leads us is far too much lost out of sight of the common Christianity of this day.” He spoke these words about 14 years before the revival burst forth in the Hebrides, before the Welsh Revival, and later the Azusa Street Revival in the USA.

That revival changed the world – it changed our Nation. We need the changes revival brings once again. Though we are spirit-filled people living over 100 years later, we are no different than 1890. It is UNCOMMON for us to stand as witnesses of the reality of a supernatural influence. I know by the Spirit of God, that is time His tangible presence is a COMMON experience around His people.

So, Jesus is ready to pour out His Spirit upon us for World Wide Revival. Indeed, He began calling and preparing His Disciples in new ways October 2007 when we entered the Jewish New Year 5768.

At that time we felt a shift. Doors were being slammed closed that no man can re-open and Doors were flung open that no man can shut. But the world does not move on God’s calendar as it should, so we have waited for more and more of the church to HEAR THE SOUND of HIS CALL.

Though He has largely been ignored, Jesus in His love and mercy stands dripping with grace and favor constantly calling His disciples to Him so that He may give them power over unclean spirits to cast them out and to heal all manner of sickness, disease, weakness and infirmity. Why? To show the lost and dying that He is ALIVE and LOVES them.

Some have answered. The young ones are moving in more and more power. I am most concerned in this article about my generation. We baby boomers have not risen to the heights we can and must achieve in the Lord! The heights we reach are to be the foundation for our children. So far, we have given our children a mess full of religion, selfishness and materialism that invaded the church. Let’s do better, let’s finish well for our grandkids and for the sake of all of the people who are waiting on us that do not yet know Jesus as Savior.

So, I repeat, you need to answer His call in order to receive. Young or old, Jesus is calling you to Him. The doorway of the supernatural promises of jurisdiction, superhuman authority over demon spirits and disease stands open for everyone.

There are no hindrances in Christ Jesus. The institution of the church cannot stop the body of Christ any longer. We’ve been in a spiritual famine because of decisions by church leadership that was beyond our control. The Lord gave me Isaiah 5 to explain… starting in verse 12:

12 The harp and the strings, The tambourine and flute, And wine are in their feasts; But they do not regard the work of the LORD, Nor consider the operation of His hands. 13 Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because they have no knowledge; Their honorable men are famished,
And their multitude dried up with thirst. 14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself And opened its mouth beyond measure; Their glory and their multitude and their pomp, And he who is jubilant, shall descend into it. 15 People shall be brought down, Each man shall be humbled, And the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled. 16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, And God who is holy shall be hallowed in righteousness. 17 Then the lambs shall feed in their pasture, And in the waste places of the fat ones strangers shall eat.

Despite this bleak condition of the institution of the USA church, the Holy Spirit told me in Proverbs 10:3 “The Lord will not allow the righteous soul to famish!” The remnant who have remained true to the Lord are the sheep who shall feed in the pasture and even in the midst of a waste place (a wilderness) we shall eat! The Tabernacle of David is being built up. Freedom is come to the people of the Lord.

He has been working during this time of famine in our nation and has positioned enough leadership in the body of Christ who are men and women after His own heart and who prefer His Presence to religion, reject the Anti-christ invasion of ideas in the church and who have fought materialism with all their might.

These have been crying out for revival. The Lord has heard their cries – He has heard our cries and He is moving on our behalf lest we die of starvation. He has arisen and His enemies are being scattered and those who hate him are fleeing from before him. The besiegement upon His body has ended.

However, the truth is that because we have lived in the wilderness for so long and because we have endured famine for so long we have set our expectations so low that we aren’t hearing him or, have so little faith left we cannot answer. Or, we ourselves need to be healed of sickness and infirmity in order to move forward.

I know that we cannot move on to Verse 5 where it says “Jesus sent the twelve out” until we cast off the affects of the famine and are purged of unbelief and selfish motives that engulfed us due to discouragement and disappointment during the wilderness trek.

Famine victims cannot immediately eat a huge meal. Someone dying of thirst cannot immediately drink a whole glass of water. In fact, our body starts to shut down and prepares to die. We need to pat our dry lips and tongues with water to wake up our bodies to accept water once again. We need to sip broth and soft foods to stimulate our stomach and digestive tract to take on solid food once again.

The same is true for our famished souls.

Matthew 9 verse 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

Hebrews 3:12 -19
12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said:“Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”16 For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Fellow baby boomers, and all who love the Lord, before we can enter into the promise of Matthew 10, we have to repent of every form of rebellion, disappointment, discouragement, and selfish behavior. And, we need to repent and be set free of doubt and unbelief. Then receive forgiveness and His grace.

Our God wants to catapult us into His supernatural realms this year. Jesus is calling. Let’s answer the call!
